How GST Search works
The tool auto-detects what you have typed, so you never need to pick a search mode:
- Enter what you know. A 15-character GSTIN (like
27AAPFU0939F1ZV), a 10-character PAN, or simply the business name. The input is validated on our servers first — a GSTIN with an impossible check digit is rejected instantly, before any lookup happens. - We fetch the record. Frequently searched numbers are served from our cache in milliseconds; everything else is pulled live from GSTN records through authorised verification APIs. You will see a “cached” or “live” badge on every result so you always know how fresh the data is.
- Read the result on the same page. Legal name, trade name, registration status, state, registration date and more render inline — no page reload, no PDF download, no email gate.
If you want a search box tuned to one specific job, use the dedicated tools: verify a supplier’s GST number before payment, check whether a GST number is valid and active, find every GSTIN registered under one PAN, or search a GST number by company name.
What data you get for every GSTIN
| Field | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Legal name | The name registered against the PAN — the name that should appear on tax invoices. |
| Trade name | The brand or shop name the business actually operates under, which often differs from the legal name. |
| GSTIN status | Active, Cancelled or Suspended — the single most important field before you claim input tax credit. |
| Registration date | When the GSTIN was granted. A very recent registration on a supplier claiming years of trading history is a flag worth checking. |
| State and state code | Where the registration is held, decoded from the first two digits of the GSTIN. |
| Constitution of business | Proprietorship, partnership, private limited company, LLP and so on. |
| Taxpayer type | Regular, composition, casual, SEZ unit, non-resident and other categories. |
| Principal place of business | The registered address and jurisdiction details. |
Anatomy of a GSTIN: what the 15 characters mean
Every GST Identification Number follows the same fixed structure. Take the example 27AAPFU0939F1ZV:
| Characters | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | 27 |
State code — 27 is Maharashtra. Every state and Union Territory has its own two-digit code. |
| 3–12 | AAPFU0939F |
The PAN of the business. The same PAN sits inside every GSTIN the entity holds across India. |
| 13 | 1 |
Entity code — the running count of registrations that PAN holds within the state (1–9, then A–Z). |
| 14 | Z |
Default letter, currently always Z, reserved for future use. |
| 15 | V |
Check digit computed from the first 14 characters. It catches typos before any database is queried. |
Because the structure is mathematical, many fake numbers can be exposed without any lookup at all — a GSTIN whose fifteenth character does not match the checksum is invalid, full stop. For the character-by-character rules, read the GST number format guide; if you are starting from scratch, our What is GSTIN explainer covers the basics, the full form and who needs one.
GST state codes at a glance
The first two digits of any GSTIN identify the state of registration. A few of the most commonly seen codes:
| Code | State / UT | Code | State / UT |
|---|---|---|---|
| 07 | Delhi | 27 | Maharashtra |
| 09 | Uttar Pradesh | 29 | Karnataka |
| 24 | Gujarat | 33 | Tamil Nadu |
| 19 | West Bengal | 36 | Telangana |
All 37 codes, including Union Territories and special codes, are on the complete GST state code list.
Who uses GST Search
Accountants verifying vendor invoices before month-end filing. Purchase teams running checks during vendor onboarding, where a single cancelled registration on the supplier list can put lakhs of rupees of input tax credit at risk. E-commerce sellers confirming a buyer’s GSTIN before issuing a B2B invoice, and marketplace sellers reconciling the registrations on their settlement reports. Anyone quoting a price who needs the GST calculator to split CGST, SGST and IGST correctly. If you deal with dozens of suppliers at once, our upcoming bulk GST verification tool will check a whole CSV in one go.
Frequently asked questions
Is this GST search tool really free?
Yes. Single lookups by GSTIN, PAN or name are free, with no account, no login and no daily paywall. We apply a fair-use rate limit to keep the service fast for everyone.
Where does the data come from?
Results are sourced from GSTN registration records via authorised GST verification API providers. Frequently searched GSTINs are cached for speed; every result is labelled cached or live, and our data sources page describes the exact refresh windows for each record type.
Can I find a GST number if I only know the company name?
Yes — type the name in the box above, or use the dedicated search-by-name tool linked earlier. Name search works best with the legal name; if you only know the shop or brand name, try that too, since trade names are also indexed. For common names, use the state code in each result to pick the right registration.
How do I check if a GST number is active or cancelled?
Search the GSTIN above and read the status field: Active, Cancelled or Suspended. Active means the registration is live; Cancelled means it has ended and fresh tax invoices against it cannot support input tax credit; Suspended is a provisional state while cancellation proceedings are pending. The GST number check page linked above explains the practical steps for each.
Why does one PAN show several GST numbers?
GST registration is state-wise. A business operating from Maharashtra, Karnataka and Delhi holds three GSTINs — same PAN in characters 3–12, different state codes in front, and sometimes a different 13th character where one PAN holds multiple registrations in a single state. The search-by-PAN tool linked earlier shows all of them together.
Is this the official government GST portal?
No. GST Search (gstsearch.net) is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the Government of India, GSTN or the official portal gst.gov.in. We exist because the official portal requires captchas and multiple steps for a simple lookup, and we make no claim to be an official record — our full disclaimer page spells this out.
